Bluefields Bay Villas, Bluefields, Jamaica

“We are the ultimate private location that is seafront, romantic and personalized.  When people rent from us, they get their own villa that is not only on the Caribbean and not only with their own private pool and full staff, but is also in a part of Jamaica that is not commercialized in a major way," says Innkeeper Deborah Moncure.

Hidden in paradise, bejeweled by an azure sky and sea, five sanctuary-style villas fulfill every whim…grant every dream…at least so it seems in this breathtaking, most ethereal and memorable of places. Innkeeper Deborah Moncure sums up Bluefields Bay Villas in Bluefields, the southern coast of Jamaica, as distinctive, personalized, authentic.

“We are the ultimate private location that is seafront, romantic and personalized. When people rent from us, they get their own villa that is not only on the Caribbean and not only with their own private pool and full staff, but is also in a part of Jamaica that is not commercialized in a major way. There’s no distractions from having the ultimate, wonderful time. There are people to look after you, serve you fantastic food, great tropical drinks.”

Debbie further describes this unspoiled region with its captivating mountain views as “away from all the honky tonks, yet only 35 miles from the airport.”

Think romance and kids don’t mix?  Think again. Debbie says that couples marry here, return to celebrate their anniversaries and “once they have children, the place even gets better, because nannies are included as well and not only nannies, but we actually include complimentary laundry services. No one does this, people go home with suitcases of clean clothes.”

Imagine, ultimate pampering in the supreme location. In fact, in 1981, Braxton Moncure fell head-over-heels (or shall we say sandals?) in love with the area after he first met the friendly people of the idyllic fishing and farming village, then purchased his first villa.

Debbie recalls the “wonderful, old house,” previously a weekend escape for a Jamaican family, and as “spectacular as you can possibly hope for.” Now guests experience utter romance at Mullion Cove, a six-bedroom villa with an awe-inspiring veranda perched 30 feet above sea level.

By 1986, the couple added San Michele. Today, remodeled and enlarged, the villa reveals four bedrooms, including two impressive master suites and two additional bedrooms in the guest cottage. San Michele occupies its very own islet, reached by a footbridge. Debbie says that purchasing the second villa sparked the idea of holiday rentals.

Moncure’s third addition, Milestone Cottage, is a two-bedroom favorite for honeymooners. Also completely remodeled, guests have the opportunity to test its cliff side plunge pool with underwater seats; not to mention a dramatic staircase besides an oversized fig tree that leads to a private (the buzzword at these properties) pavilion.

After years of governmental red tape, the couple built the final two distinctive homes and the Treehouse, a common area comprising a bar, living-dining space, overlooking the beach and sea. The Hermitage, with two spacious master bedroom suites and two small bedrooms, sits in its own four-acre Garden of Eden.  Cottonwood Cottage is “the most nature-integrated villa.” The two-bedroom suite located on a four-acre, fully preserved tropical beach has many never-ending perks. Guests relish the private infinity-edge swimming pool with lap lane, seats and whirlpool jets.

Debbie says that Braxton, who owns a tax firm in Virginia, is also a true enthusiast for antiques and fine furnishings. Each villa boasts the “Moncure Collection,” featuring four-poster canopy beds; local Jamaican antique sideboards, tables, old planter’s chairs with leather sling and so on.

Well-known neighborhood philanthropists, the innkeepers further accent each villa with fine china, crystal, silver—lots of it. “We’re doing our best to keep away from paper plates…and all the rest of the crummy stuff that we all end up using at home, because it’s convenient. Here we don’t have to have convenience be the item that is ruling us, because there’s a staff here to help make it work,” Debbie explains.

Among a roster of activities like snorkeling and sea kayaking, guests can enjoy weekly cocktail parties and a weekly (Wednesday) James Jerk Chicken lunch served with mimosas and a host of tropical drinks. Named after a worker’s special recipe, the entrée is prepared with a secret spicy sauce and barbequed over flavorful pimento wood (that produces allspice).

Under a constant training regime, the chefs, which are, like the rest of the staff, referred to as part of the Moncure family, always develop new and exciting menu selections. Diners, too, appreciate the fruits and vegetables from local farms, which Debbie describes as “incredibly healthy, fresh food.”

“There’s nothing as luxurious as having everything done for you; except that this isn’t like an all-inclusive where you go to some common dining space and there’s this line and dishes with semi-hot food. You get your own cook, you get your own waiter, you actually make every meal request your own; exactly what you want to eat, where you want to eat it, when you want to eat it. It’s totally personalized,” she adds.

Considering the surroundings and way-too-many, over-the-top amenities to list, the villas, a perfect option for intimate destination weddings and special occasions, Debbie says are “a bargain for what we offer.”

Distinctive, personalized, authentic and plenty of praise from repeat guests at Bluefields Bay Villas who know the one true vacation.
